Sperm donation is required in cases of:
- Non-Obstructive Azoospermia – there is no sperm production at all.
- Obstructive azoospermia when patient is unwilling to go for ICSI.
- Poor semen count with poor semen quality and morphology- when patient is unwilling to go for ICSI.
Donor semen is taken from Semen Bank. A sperm bank or cryobank is a facility or enterprise that collects and stores human sperm from sperm donors for use by women who need donor sperms to achieve pregnancy. A sperm donor must meet specific requirements regarding age and medical history. Semen samples are frozen semen samples and used only after a quarantine period of 6 months. Re-Testing of donor for viral markers is carried out before the sample is released. Fresh donor semen sample cannot be used for IUI as it may be a health risk to the patient.
IVF with donor sperm is done when IUI with donor sperm fails or there is a female infertility factor as well eg. Tubal block.
