Uterine fibroids are benign tumors present near or inside the uterus (womb). They are common in females of 25 to 55 years of age. They are formed due to estrogen imbalance in the body, they increase in size when estrogen is boosted up in the body. As such they create little to no symptoms, some may experience increased menstrual bleeding or heavy cramping during the periods. However, based on their locations, fibroids can be the cause of your infertility or frequent miscarriages. They occupy the space within the womb thereby making it difficult to conceive and to grow the baby. The fibroids that create such issues must be removed well in time to achieve an uneventful pregnancy and a healthy baby thereafter.

Can Fibroids affect your chances of getting pregnant?
The short answer is Yes, they can.
Where some fibroids have little to no effect on your fertility while others may be the sole reason behind the delay in getting pregnant. Fibroids can be classified based on their location and the effect on your fertility they create-
- Type 0 and 1 fibroids
Also known as Submucosal fibroids are inside the uterine cavity. They must be removed as they won’t let the fetus grow fully even if the pregnancy sets in.
- Type 2 and type 3 fibroids
They are half inside the uterine wall and half outside. This kind of fibroids can create problems such as infertility and embryo sustenance. They should be removed by hysteroscopic resection. It is a daycare procedure without any cuts or stitches. So the patient can go home on the same day.
- Type 4 & Type 5 Fibroids
These types of fibroids are found expanding in the wall of the uterus. So they are removed only when they are abrupting the uterine lining, endometrium. Laparoscopic myomectomy is the procedure performed to remove them. This keyhole surgery makes the surgery less invasive and provides early recovery. The patient will be discharged on the next day of the procedure.
- Type 6, 7 and 8 fibroids
These fibroids create little to no problems in fertility or pregnancy as they are present outside the uterine walls. However, if they are hampering the functioning of any other reproductory organ such as fallopian tubes etc, then they must be removed in order to achieve pregnancy.
