Frequently Asked Questions

In general, IUI is done in two steps: First, Pre-injection medicine stimulates the development of the egg, making a woman more fertile than she would be without. The semen is then injected into the uterine cavity, which eliminates the need for it to swim through the cervical opening and into the uterus on its own, allowing it to reach the egg more easily. This is an OPD procedure.

The biggest difference between both the procedures is that the sperm is not injected into the egg during IUI to achieve fertilization. In the procedure of IUI, the fertilization is meant to happen completely naturally, infertility specialists just help to place the sperm a little closer to the egg through this process. Whereas in IVF, sperm and egg are fertilized in a petri dish and then the formed embryo is placed inside the uterus.

Patients who are suffering from low sperm count, decreased sperm mobility, unexplained fertility, hostile cervical condition, or ejaculation dysfunction can all benefit from an IUI procedure.

The IUI procedure is carried out around the time of ovulation.

The entire procedure is fairly painless.

As the sample is placed directly inside the uterus. The occasional wetness that can occur following an IUI procedure is due to the cervical mucus.

The Implantation is done generally after 5-7 days of your ovulation/your IUI procedure.

Patients are recommended to wait for two weeks before taking a pregnancy test to prevent a false positive due to hormones and injectables.

The number of cycles of IUI and the couple's original diagnosis help in determining the success rate. With each insemination cycle the pregnancy rate is between 15-20%, couples who undertake three rounds of IUI, the pregnancy rate might be as high as 30 percent. Fertility drugs like Clomid, Tamoxifen or injectable Gonadotropins improve the chances of getting pregnant.

If a couple hasn't had success with well-timed IUI after four ovulatory cycles, it's time to explore IVF. It also depends upon age, AMH level and other infertility factors.

It’s a rare occurrence, especially if there was a problem while carrying out the procedure. Some women might also experience light bleeding with ovulation.

Pregnancies resulting from insemination with the male partner's sperm usually occur in the first 3 attempts. However, the chances for success per month decrease after about 3 attempts and drops further after about 4-5 unsuccessful attempts. As a result, IUI treatment is usually limited to three or four attempts. It may be fair to attempt again if the cause of infertility is lack of ovulation or in cases of donor semen sample cycles.
