Ovulation is the process of release of an egg from the ovary, it is must happen process so that pregnancy can be achieved. If ovulation is irregular and not completely absent this is called oligovulation and the term Anovulation means lack of ovulation. Both the process oligovulation and anovulation are kinds of ovulatory dysfunction.

Ovulatory dysfunction is the single most frequent cause of female infertility and denotes a problem with the monthly release of an egg. When the woman is anovulatory she can’t get pregnant because there is no egg to be fertilized. If the woman is having irregular ovulation she has fewer chances of conceiving since she ovulates less frequently.  Ovulatory dysfunction can be caused by number of factors, like

  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome
  • Obesity
  • Too low body weight
  • Extreme exercise
  • Hyperprolactinemia
  • Premature ovarian failure
  • Advanced maternal age
  • Thyroid dysfunction
  • Stress

Fertility drugs are the most frequent conduct for the problem of anovulation. For women with PCOS insulin-sensitizing drugs may help the woman to start ovulating again. If it does not work using fertility drugs in combination increases the chance of success in women who did not ovulate on fertility drugs alone. There is another treatment also like advanced age program, egg donor program and embryo adoption program.
